Wauchope local Cathy Eggert has been stepping up to support MND NSW since her brother Tim was diagnosed with motor neurone disease four years ago.
She and her parents John and Grace Eggert recently held a morning tea in aid of MND NSW, with over 150 people from Wauchope and surrounds coming along to the event to raise $5,353 to support families facing MND. The Eggert family will also be taking part in Walk to Defeat MND Port Macquarie on October 25 as volunteers, and as part of Tim’s Team.
“I’m doing the Walk – the 5km is pretty easy compared to what my younger brother going through. He used to be a police officer before he was diagnosed with MND,” Cathy said.
“I’ll be volunteering and walking in Walk to Defeat MND Port Macquarie. I’ve also signed my mum, dad and hubby up to volunteer too, and my brother John and sister in law Belinda will be coming to the Walk as well.”
Cathy knows how important having the support of your local community can be when you’re facing MND. Improving awareness about motor neurone disease, and raising funds through events like Walk to Defeat MND Port Macquarie is also vital for supporting families facing the condition.
“I’ve become aware of MND because of my brother. They still don’t know for sure what’s causing it or how to cure it, but it’s on the increase and can essentially happen to anyone at any time. It’s a progressive neurological condition that is a very expensive disease to live with, so we need to give these families as much support as we can,” Cathy said.
“Just raising awareness about motor neurone disease is a major support for people living with MND, especially as it’s a disease that can progress so fast and have a big impact on their lives. Having a community that is so supportive is also pretty key to the wellbeing of people affected by MND,” she said.
“That’s why I am taking part - in support of my brother, and others in the area with MND.”
